Biography/History

Sir George Hubert Wilkins (1888-1958), explorer and pioneer of polar aviation was born at Mount Bryan East, South Australia and studied engineering. He made trans-polar flight over the Arctic in 1928 and over the Antarctic later the same year. He returned to the Arctic in an obsolete submarine the Nautilus proving the feasibility of submarine voyages beneath the sea-ice. He is closely associated with the Lincoln Ellsworth Antarctic exploration (1933-1939). Knighted in 1928.
