This interview continues on from John Farquharson's previous interview recorded in 1982 & held in the National Library of Australia Oral History & Folklore collection at TRC 1168. John speaks about leaving his job with the Goulburn Post in 1951 to work as a Parliamentary reporter & N.S.W. State Political correspondent for Australian United Press; significant events reported by him during his two years working in Sydney (1951-1952); his move to the Federal Press Gallery, Canberra as parliamentary reporter (1952-1956), a position he resumed in 1956-1957 after an overseas trip as a member of Moral Rearmament Movement (1956); significant events in Australian history such as the Petrov Affair, Browne-Fitzpatrick gaolings, Voyager disaster; recollections of parliamentarians & journalists; his work for Australian Associated Press in Melbourne (1959)
Farquharson speaks about his return to duties with Australian United Press in Canberra (1960-1964); his move to Papua New Guinea to edit the South Pacific Post (1965); memories of up & coming New Guinea leaders; his return to Canberra (1966) as senior sub-editor of The Canberra Times; memories of early editors & highlights of his 22 years with the Canberra Times; his position as Chief of Staff & News Editor of The Canberra Times & Political Correspondent for Sydney's Sun-Herald in the late 1960s; his appointment as Assistant Editor of The Canberra Times in 1975 & Deputy Editor in 1985; the dismissal of the Whitlam Goernment (1975); joining the staff of Hon.Wal Fife MP (1988); his return to The Canberra Times as sub-editor in 1992; his work for the National Library of Australia's Oral History Program (1993-2003); his job as obituary writer for The Age, Sydney Morning Herald & The Canberra Times since 1996; his current work as a freelance writer & journalist.
