Haines spent her early family years growing up in country South Australia, settling in Adelaide by the time she attended Brighton High School; was elected to Parliament as the Senator for South Australia in 1977. She was elected Deputy leader of the Australian Democrats in 1985; elected to the position of Federal leader in 1986 which she held until 1990. Since 1990 she had taken on a number of roles; as a freelance writer and speaker; involvement in a number of organizations; as a member of Parliamentary delegations to South Africa and Iraq. |
