Miseron Levi, composer & writer of Torres Strait Islander cultural & religious songs & music lives on Moa Island, Torres Strait, Qld. He recalls how, like many Torres Strait Islander men of his generation he worked in maritime and railway industries; migrated to the mainland (ie Australia) where he lived for many years. The interview focuses mainly on the music Levi composes, contemporary "kores" religious songs sung in both sacred & secular performances. There is also some information on the music & cultural practices of the Torres Strait Islanders in the St. Pauls' community on Moa Island, Torres Strait, past & present. There are insights into the process of how he composes religious songs & their cultural dimension. There is also some description of the music on pearling & trochus boats with Mer Islanders who taught him to sing in their Meriam Mir language. On tape 2 Levi sings his own compositions, recorded on Feb. 24, 2002 at Thursday Island, Qld.
