The first letter was started on board the John Taylor at the Anchorage Ground Williamstown on September 12, 1852 and describes Landon's arrival in Melbourne. It is continued from the Duke of York Hotel on 19 September and describes Landon's difficulties in obtaining work, his lack of money, and describes such matters as prices, weather and living conditions in Melbourne.
The second, written at Richmond County of North Bourke, Victoria on January 16 1853, continues his description of Melbourne, his financial difficulties and Landon's mistake in going to the diggings instead of immediately attempting to establish himself as a barrister.
The third letter, written at 60 Chancery Lane, Melbourne on May 16, 1853, contains advice to his brother on migrating to Australia, for example, what to bring and advising that employment prospects are good.
The fourth letter, dated May 17, 1853, was sent by screw steamer Harbinger. Landon expresses hope that he will soon be getting employment with the government. All letters also cover news and comments about family and friends. The transcripts are also available in digital format.
