- Summary:
-
Stuart's interest in the Aboriginal peoples is reflected in his numerous entries in his journals. Their ennoblement in this drawing is seen in the figure of the hunter, to the left, returning to his "Miami" with food. His wife is shown at the entrance, making a welcoming gesture, while smoke rises from the home fire. It is a small but real play on the nineteenth-century image of 'coming home'. The pose of the native hunter is based on that of the Apollo del Belvedere, being a reverse image of this famous Greco-Roman statue.
