Deschamps talks about his family background; his schooling at Glamorgan Preparatory Grammar School and then in Rome and Brussels; his early interest in diplomacy and schooling at Melbourne Grammar. In 1937 he was selected for the Dept. of External Affairs and he describes both the Dept and Canberra at the time. Deschamps then discusses his experiences as Official Secretary, Ottawa High Commission 1940-43; New Caledonia 1943-45; charge d'affaires, Moscow 1945-47 and 1949 as head of the military mission in Berlin. He then talks about his experiences as counsellor in Paris, 1953-58; Suez affair and Hungarian revolution of 1956. He then discusses his posting to Dublin, 1958-61 as charge d'affaires which included 3 months in South Africa as acting High Commissioner. Deschamps then talks about his next posting as ambassador to Cambodia in 1962; views on Sihanouk; withdrawal of American Embassy and his looking after all aspects of American interest in Cambodia and his own continuing interest and connection with Cambodia; discusses his posting to Chile and his continuing interest in that country and its people. Deschamps concludes by giving his views on various Ministers and colleagues.
