Photocopy of the typescript memoirs by Lieutenant Col. A. H. Russell written at Torquay between the years 1890 and 1900. The memoirs commence with the birth of Russell's father Andrew Hamilton in 1772 and his mother Sarah in 1782.
- Biography/History:

A. H. Russell was a New Zealand politician, soldier and settler. 1811- his family landed in Portsmouth. 1830-moved to the Isle of White and subsequently to Plymouth. In 1828 Russell was appointed to an Ensigncy in the 22nd Cheshire Regiment then stationed in Jamaica. In 1845 Russell made his first trip to New Zealand and in 1846 was appointed Superintendent of Military Roads to be constructed by the troops. 1851-took command of the Bay of Islands. In 1858 Russell returned to England. The following year he sold out of the Army and returned to NZ; purchased the licence to run 3000 sheep on Munga Kuri (Hawke's Bay). 1861-Appointed Chief Commissioner and Resident Magistrate for Hawke's Bay Province, NZ. 1862-Appointed Member of the Legislative Council of NZ. 1865 joined the Stafford Ministry as Native Minister (left the Ministry in 1866).
