The collection includes diaries and appointment books (1954-92), research papers and articles (1938-41), papers relating to the Australian Institute of International Affairs, papers concerning the Department of Information (1941-42), Department of External Affairs papers (comprising handwritten diary notes, draft reports, correspondence, photographs, miscllaneous notes and various policy papers from 1942-48 and 1956-59), South Pacific Commission correspondence and papers (1948-51 and 1956-66), United Nations correspondence, addresses and other papers (1951-56), political and technical reports, cables, dispatches, correspondence and photograph albums concerning Vietnam and Laos (1959-61).
There are also official reports, cables, correspondence, political dispatches and 'crisis diaries' concerning Lebanon (1967-68), papers relating to the Pacific Islands (1951-91), manuscripts, drafts, working notes, tapes and transcribed tapes, research materials, letters and notes for his three-part biography, post retirement correspondence and papers (1969-93), a series of press clippings on various subjects (1969-92) and printed material.
