He was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship in 1931 and graduated from Oxford University with a first class honours degree in economic and political history. After returning to Australia he took up various appointments at Adelaide and Sydney Universities, and at the University of Melbourne, 1956-1965, before joining the staff of the Australian National University as Professor of History, Institute of Advanced Studies in 1966. In addition to the titles mentioned above, he published two other major works, the Political economy in Australia (1949) and The Hopetoun blunder (1957).
