Summary

MS 144 comprises a single document, of foolscap size, containing a list of convicts who were embarked for Botany Bay from New Geneva Barracks in Ireland on the ship "Friendship" (9 p.). The indent lists 172 male prisoners including many defeated rebels in the 1798 uprising in Ireland. For each name, entries show the prisoner's offence and sentence. Handwritten entries in ink are arranged in three columns per page; not in alphabetical order.

Biography/History

The ship "Friendship", owned by John and James Mangles, was launched in the Thames in 1793, sailed from Cork in 1799 and arrived in Port Jackson on 16 February, 1800. This ship is Friendship II, not the "Friendship" of the First Fleet.

Manuscript reference no.: MS 144.

Loss of title at torn corner. Remaining title reads: "... of men embarked from New Geneva ... on board the Friendship transport ... for Botany Bay with their several crimes & sentences".

Title on folder: Friendship indent.

Condition: Upper left corner torn off at original red wax seal. Document pages glued to backing fascicle.
