- Biography/History:
-
Millicent Bryant was the first woman in the Commonwealth to gain a pilot's licence. Millicent Maude Bryant (1878-1927) was an early Australian aviator. At age 49, she was the first woman to earn a category ‘A’ private pilot's licence in Australia, after taking a test at the Australian Aero Club of New South Wales on 23 March 1927. At that time, the field of aviation was still new, dangerous and glamorous - and heavily male dominated. Bryant competed in the inaugural Ladies Oakes flying race on 6 October 1927 and came second with Margaret Reardon coming first and Evelyn Follett coming third in the three-entrant race. Millicent's last recorded flight in her logbook was on 10 October 1927. Millicent Maude Bryant was killed on 3 November 1927 in the Greycliffe ferry accident on Sydney Harbour. Described as ‘petite and softly spoken’ Bryant was also a businesswoman, small-scale property developer, golfer, student of Japanese at Sydney University and an early motorist who had driven over 35,000 miles around New South Wales up to the summit of Mt Kosciuszko. In 2001 Bryant was inducted into the National Pioneer Women's Hall of Fame and in 2007 the Australian Women Pilot's Association attached an official plaque to her tombstone, to mark the 80th anniversary of her pilot's license.
