Summary

Online version of the exhibition held at the National Library of Australia in 1998 to commemorate the centenary of the birth of Sir Rex Nan Kivell. He amassed an extensive collection of documentary evidence relating to the European exploration, discovery and colonisation of Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific. Comprising over 14,000 items in a variety of media, the Collection was acquired from Nan Kivell by the National Library. The online exhibition is divided into six sections. Terra Australis Incognita, explores the theories about the Great South Land which existed in the European imagination for centuries. Curious to Discover, the second section follows on with the European fascination and discovery of new places. The third section, The Progress of Art, examines the progress of British exploration through artistic visions. The Furthest Eden investigates the relationship between the British and the Maoris in New Zealand, while the next section Servants of Empire portrays the missionaries and others who 'civilised' and occupied the new lands. The exhibition concludes with information about Rex Nan Kivell.
