George McNeill, sailmaker, reads from the memoirs of his grandfather, Robert McNeill who sailed as a deck boy in square rigged and clipper ships from about 1900. Topics he wrote about included provisions, routines, and abandoning ship when the hold catches fire. McNeill speaks about his family background; sailmaking when he joined the family firm in the 1940s; eighteen footers; his wife and family; other things made by sailmakers apart from sails; modern sail materials and the effect upon the sailmaking trade; making theatrical back-drops, oil booms, etc., and the future of sailmaking.
