Summary

Wallace speaks of growing up in a small Scottish family with 2 brothers in Melbourne, returning for a year to Aberdeen, Scotland in 1927 so his mother could nurse her mother while his father stayed to take up a position as Vice-Chancellor at University of Sydney, his difficulties with school education, his impressions of the Great Depression which motivated him towards a Public Service career, his shyness in relation to the opposite sex, why he found university so motivating.

Biography/History

Wallace was film librarian and Head of the Film Section, Commonwealth National Library and later under the National Library of Australia from 1956 till 1966, Coordinator of Special Resources, NLA from 1966 till 1969, Principal Librarian (Special Collections) from 1969 until his retirement at the age of 61.
