Manuscript journal kept by Richard Atkins during his residence in New South Wales. It provides an account of events in Sydney, 1792-1796, referring to convicts and prices among other matters, and includes poems and notes on various topics. The journal also touches on the voyages undertaken by Atkins to Botany Bay and South America (1 v.).
- Biography/History:

Richard Atkins (formerly Richard Bowyer) left England on 20 June 1791 and arrived at Sydney on 13 February 1792 on the "Pitt". He remained in the Colony of New South Wales for 18 years, and during that time held the positions of registrar of the Vice-Admiralty Court, inspector of public works, registrar of imports and exports and acting superintendent of police. In 1796, he became Deputy Judge Advocate. He was appointed as Judge Advocate in 1802 and remained in office until 1809. In 1810, Atkins sailed from Sydney on the "Hindostan", and returned to England where he entered retirement.

- Folio, comprising 128 pages and measuring 27 cm., in full-bound calf. Part of old vellum binding inserted inside cover, with initials and date "R A 1791". Journal entries written in a neat hand in ink. Inserted in the folio is a copy of a bill.
