Cobbold, Professor of Physiology, talks about his childhood memories; influence of grandfather; education at a Jesuit-run Grammar School; first job in accountancy; invalided out of Army; teaching at a Grammar School and doing an honours degree in chemistry and a subsidiary course in physiology at the University College at Nottingham. He then talks about his position teaching physiology at Chelsea Polytechnic and doing an honours degree in physiology and working at St Thomas' Hospital from 1953-64. Cobbold then provides background on his decision to come to Australia in 1964 and establish a medical school in Tasmania with Professor Cyril Barnet. He then talks about his political ambitions, while in England, as a member of British Conservative Party and his responsibility for the Party's parliamentary candidate, Edward Heath.
Cobbold then gives his initial reactions to Tasmania and the lack of reliable information from Australia House. He also talks about learning to play piano; reputation as an after-dinner speaker; successes enjoyed by students of the medical school and the highlight of his career which he felt was the establishment of the Tasmanian Medical School.
