Summary

Young talks about his family background; childhood memories and experiences during air raids in London; dancing professionally at 15; schooling at Broomfield Private School and Glasgow High School and 1st professional engagement as a dancer with Stephan Grappelli and his Quintet. Young then shares his recollections of Stephan Grappelli and describes a typical variety audition. He then discusses the standard of dancing required of actors at that time; West End debut in 1945; working in variety theatre; living in theatrical "digs"; role of producers, in particular, Bernard Delfont and Leslie Grade; 1st big break and army experiences. Young then describes events leading him to join George Carden Dancers; career of David Hamilton; working with the Crazy Gang and ambitions to become a solo act; working with Frankie Howerd; involvement in "Arsenic and Old Lace"; Cafe De Paris and some of the performers who worked there, in particular, Marlene Dietrich and recollections of Judy Garland.
