The papers relate mainly to Burmester's work as a senior member of the staff of the National Library of Australia and to his scholarly and bibliographical activities in his retirement. They include reports, minutes and other internal documents, correspondence, speeches, talks, draft bibliographies and copies of his unpublished memoirs. There are papers on the Conference on Source Materials for Australian Studies (1961), the National Book Resources Development Committee (1963-1964), and the Humanities Research Centre at the Australian National University (1974-1978). Other papers relate to the four-volume work, National Library of Australia: guide to the collections (1974-1982).
The correspondents include Sir Rex Nan Kivell, J.A. La Nauze, L.F. Fitzhardinge, A.P. Fleming and Dan Sprod.

Librarian and bibliographer. Burmester was born on 16 June 1910 in Boulder City, Western Australia. He was educated at Claremont Central School and Perth Modern School, and in 1933 graduated as a Bachelor of Arts with Honours at the University of Western Australia. In 1934 Burmester joined the Commonwealth Parliamentary Library as a Legislative Research Clerk. During World War II he served with the A.I.F. in the Northern Territory. He returned to the Library after the War and in 1947 was appointed Liaison Officer in London. While in this post Burmester successfully negotiated the acquisition of the Nan Kivell and the Kashnor collections, and the inauguration of the Australian Joint Copying Project. Following his return to Canberra in 1951, Burmester was appointed Chief Reference Officer initially in the Commonwealth Parliamentary Library and after 1960 in the National Library of Australia. In 1967 he became Assistant National Librarian, serving under Harold White and briefly under Allan Fleming. Burmester retired in January 1971. He was awarded the Imperial Service Order in 1970. In his retirement, Burmester undertook a number of bibliographical and scholarly projects, and National Library of Australia: guide to the collections was published in four volumes between 1974 and 1982.
