The collection includes reprint publications written by Professor Huckstep. They include, Rehabilitating the disabled in Africa (1964), Orthopaedic problems in the newer world (1970), Simple appliances for developing countries (annotated, s.d.), Polio problems in East Africa (1966). Also included is Medical students behind barbed wire (1951), an account of the time Huckstep spent in an internment camp in Japan, and a short biography. Includes WorldOrtho on CD ROM, 2001 edition vs 2.
The Acc06/148 instalment comprises material relating to Huckstep's career and includes papers on lecture tours, reports of overseas visits, brochures and notes relating to specific areas of orthopaedic medicine. In addition, there are photographs and copies of Huckstep's publications.

Orthopaedic surgeon. Ronald Lawrie Huckstep was born in England in 1926. He graduated from the Middlesex Hospital, London in 1952 and then went on to fill various surgical appointments in London hospitals between 1952 and 1960. Huckstep was Lecturer and Senior Lecturer and Reader in Orthopaedic Surgery from 1960-1967, and Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda, from 1967-1972. While in Uganda, Huckstep designed an inexpensive wheelchair that was the first fully durable, tubular wheelchair built in third world countries. By 1975, more than one thousand had been produced. Huckstep became Professor of Traumatic and Orthopaedic Surgery in the University of New South Wales in 1972, and, following his retirement, he was appointed Emeritus Professor. Huckstep has published widely on the treatment of poliomyelitis, trauma and the design of implants and appliances relating to orthopaedic surgery.
