Powell, a ballet dancer, dancing master and choreographer, reflects on his early life; the Sadler Wells Ballet School; Ninette de Valois; touring during World War II; his long working association with Robert Helpmann; being a character dancer and becoming a principal dancer; the Fonteyn-Nureyev partnership; impressions of Nureyev on his arrival in London; experiences as a production manager; Frederick Ashton; Peggy van Praagh and the foundation of the Australian Ballet; Australian Ballet School; international exchange of dancers; Nureyev's association with the Australian Ballet and his production of Don Quixote; video and choreography; AIDS and the ballet world, repertoire choice and casting; artistic directors of the Australian Ballet; missing an entrance; the strike by Australian Ballet dancers in early 1980s; teaching mime; second generation dancers; and his private life.
