Summary

Hannah Burke was born at St. Leonards, Tasmania in 1900. She speaks of her early life on a dairy farm 10 miles out of Deloraine, Tas. in the early 1900s; farm work and the highlight of the community's social activities being the local dances where she met her husband George in 1916/1917?; getting married in 1919 and moving around the Tasmanian countryside for work; moving to Victoria in the early 1920s when work became scarce in Tasmania; settling in Yallourn for a number of years, husband working in the coal mines; moving from Lillydale (Vic) to Neiuck West (Vic.) for better wages; first timber industry strike in 1929 lasting 6 months; very little work available during 1929-1931 and the harsh conditions of the Depression.

Burke speaks of the social conditions of country towns such as Neiuck West & Powelltown (Vic.) in the mid 1920s to 1ate 1930s; running a boarding house for timber workers at Goodwood (forest country) and the Post Office at Neiuck West; the devastation caused by the fires of 1939; end of 1939 moving to Horsfall (Vic) to operate a boarding house for timber workers who worked at the local sawmill & then onto Limberlost(Vic); how isolated the timber communities were, few women, no formal education available for the children for a number of years and her role as bush nurse; radio being the only real communication link and the remoteness of the communities having an effect on their responses to WWII ; life without modern amenities such as a fridge, freezer, washing machines or electricity; transport before roads were built and the effect restrictions on petrol had on these isolated communities; the move to Neerim Junction near Noojee(Vic) in 1950 after the Limberlost mill closed down.
