Summary

MS 3611 comprises a collection of 56 promissory notes and IOUs from remote parts of Australia, mostly put out by storekeepers, hotel keepers and commission agents in country areas. Several of the notes are signed and dated, mostly from 1922.

Issuers include: Amedulah Khan, a camel hawker at Farina, South Australia (notes reinforced with cloth); George Watson, Rankine River, S.A.; G.A. Edwards, Mayne Junction, Queensland; Hudson’s Federal Hotel, Urandangie, New South Wales; M.C.P. Biondi, Anthony’s Lagoon, Northern Territory; R. Smith of Hall’s Creek, Kimberley, Western Australia; Alick B. Scott, Fitzroy, W.A.; the Lee Brothers of Boulia, Qld.; and, storekeepers Scott & Harrington of Fitzroy, W.A. There is also a one pound note from the Colony of Victoria (no date could be discerned) and an IOU for the sum of ten shillings signed by Stephen Spencer on 23 November, 1863.

The collection also comprises 13 letters addressed to John A. Ferguson on the subject of paper currency, mentioning the commercial status of certain business people who issued notes, and enclosing specimens for Ferguson’s collection. Some correspondents used the term “shin plasters” for the notes which were also known as “calabash notes”. The letters were written between 20 June, 1922-30 October, 1923 (1 folder).
