| Summary |
George Busuttil, Malta's High Commissioner to Australia, talks about his family background; schooling and acceptance by navigation branch of RAF and his decision to leave. He then talks about joining the civil service as an executive officer in 1961 and his reasons for choosing the London vacancy, Busuttil then discusses his knowledge of Australia; return to Malta in 1966; return to London in 1971 as a First Secretary and his return to Malta to work as Director of Contracts and Supplies in Works Dept. and appointment as assistant head in 1978. He then describes positionshe has held 1978-91 and his arrival in Australia as Maltese High Commissioner in Nov. 1991.
Busuttil then considers the changes he has seen in Malta; views on Australia; achievements as High Commissioner and functions of the position; participation in overseas delegations representing Malta, in particular, China, Federal Republic of Germany and United Nations; observations of Maltese communities in Australia; effect of Australian accent on Maltese language and reception of returned migrants in Malta. He then talks about the role of the Maltese government in relation to overseas Maltese; multiculturalism; diplomatic community in Canberra; hobbies and his plans for the future.
