Dr. Jones, born South Australia in 1912, rose to become Director-General of Education in 1970, a post he held until retirement in 1977. Dr Jones speaks about his family background; after gaining a BA & BSc from Adelaide University in 1937 going on to further studies whilst working for the Education Dept. ; how he came to be appointed Inspector of Schools in 1949; whilst in the position of Director-General of Education he became widely known for his "Freedom of Authority" memorandum and the implementation of first Karmel Committee Report titled "Teachers in Australian Schools" recommendations. He also introduced inservice courses and release time scholarships for teachers. Since his retirement he has been involved in the Schools Commission & the Australian College of Education of which he is a Fellow. He has written Mathematical textbooks for secondary schools since 1941.
