| Summary |
'History of the Design no.10 entered in the competition for the best design of the Federal City of Canberra by R. C. G. Coulter, W. Scott Griffiths, Chas H. Caswell' album. It includes papers on the controversy over the Walter Burley Griffin design, newspaper clippings, photographs, and copies of the journals, handwritten notes, correspondence and reminiscences by Caswell. Correspondents include Walter Scott Griffith, the surveyor, and R.G. Coulter, the architect for the competition. Also J.M. Coane, Chairman of the competition, S. Rogers of the Public Works Department, King O'Malley, Minister for Home Affairs, G. Gann, M.P. and Arthur Comey. There is also a five-page transcript of 'The following is the story of the history of what is now known as Design no. 10 for the design for the Australian Federal Capital of Canberra'. There are also other papers related to the competition, including 'Report of the Board Appointed to Investigate and Report to the Minister for Home Affairs in Regard to Competitive Designs', 1912, papers related to the design, background papers required for the design process, correspondence, maps, newspaper clippings and copies of designs. |
| Biography/History | An engineer in the N.S.W. Public Works Department, with extensive experience in sewerage, Caswell was responsible for the engineering features of the design submitted to the Commonwealth of Australia Design for the Layout of the Federal City by Walter Scott Griffith's, Robert Coulter and Caswell in 1911. Their design was awarded fourth place in the competition, although a minority report recommended it for first prize. |
