The Hon. Thomas Hughes, barrister and Queen's Counsel, New South Wales since 1962, talks about his family background; education at St. Ignatius College (Riverview) at Lane Cove, N.S.W.; completion of 1st year law at University of Sydney in 1941; enlistment as a pilot in RAAF in May 1942 and resumption of law studies at University of Sydney at end of WWII. He then talks about his admission to the Bar in 1949; early working experiences and defamation work. Hughes then discusses his decision to enter politics in 1963 and appointment as Commonwealth Attorney-General in 1969. He then provides background to to two bills that he introduced :- Criminology Research Bill and Public Order Protection of Persons and Public Property Bill. Hughes then talks about his election to seat of Berowra in 1969; views on Gorton and McMahon; decision to leave politics; return to Bar and involvement in a number of cases. He then talks about his AO in 1988 for "services to the law"; views on N.S.W. Bar; Republicanism; outstanding legal personalities, in particular Sir Owen Dixon, and his racing interests.
