| Summary |
MS 6244 comprises corrected manuscript and typescript drafts and galley proofs of Joan Phipson's literary output, together with associated research material, correspondence, photographs, illustrations and designs. The papers also include a typescript copy of her autobiographical work "Just a silkworm" (10 boxes).
The Acc04.039 instalment comprises correspondence, diaries, financial records, books, photographs, certificates and press cuttings dating from the 1930s to the late 1990s. The major strength of the instalment is the large and well-ordered professional correspondence maintained between Phipson and her publishers in Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States. The financial records are chiefly Phipson's royalty statements for her writings over a long period of time. The personal travel diaries, written in hand, document Phipson's interest in travel (1 box, 9 cartons, 1 packet).

| Biography/History |
Children's writer. Joan Margaret Phipson was born in Sydney in 1912 to English parents and spent much of her early life travelling with them in Europe and India. On her return to Australia she was a pupil at Frensham School, and later a librarian there. After studying journalism by correspondence she worked for Reuter in London. After again returning to Australia and serving in the Women's Australian Auxiliary Air Force as a telegraphist, she married Colin Fitzhardinge in 1944. The couple settled on a property in central western New South Wales where she began writing children's books. Her first of over thirty publications was Christmas in the sun, published in 1952. In 1953, her first successful novel, Good luck to the rider, won the Children's Book Council Book of the Year award. She went on to earn international acclaim and her work was recognised by further awards and honours. In 1987, Phipson was awarded the Dromkeen Medal for her contribution to children's literature, and, in 1994, she was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM). Phipson died in April 2003. |
