Summary

MS 5948 comprises a photocopy of the article titled "Institutional autonomy and academic freedom" which appeared in Higher education: crisis and support: an international perspective (1974). There are two typescripts: Toast proposed by the Governor-General to the Water Research Foundation of Australia on the occasion of its silver anniversary in November 1980, and response by the Hon. Jack G. Beale. The collection also includes the keynote address delivered by the Governor-General to the Rotary Youth Leadership Award (R.Y.L.A.) Seminar on 8 May 1982 (1 folder).

Biography/History

Constitutional lawyer, academic and Governor-General. Zelman Cowen was Professor of Law at the University of Melbourne from 1951-1966, and Vice-Chancellor of the University of New England, 1967-1969, and University of Queensland, 1970-1977. From 1977 to 1982 he served as Governor-General of Australia. He was Provost of Oriel College, Oxford University, 1982-1990. Following his return to Australia, Cowen served as chairman of the board of Fairfax newspapers and became patron of St Kilda Football Club.
