The collection contains material from the three main stages of Panton's life: pre-war life in Europe; internment; return to active reporting, including attendance of the Nuremberg Trials and reporting on the Korean War. Other papers concern journalistic and charity work Panton undertook following his return to Australia in 1952 and draft materials for planned autobiographical works. The papers include press collects and cuttings, diaries, correspondence, draft and manuscript material, notebooks, photographs, tourist maps and guides, and ephemera such as holiday souvenirs.

Biography/History

Ronald Selkirk Panton, born in Sydney, was for 22 years the chief foreign correspondent for the London Daily Express in Germany and Central Europe and later wrote on foreign affairs for the Sydney Sun. He was interned in the German prison camp Store Grundet in Denmark from 1940 to 1944, and was the only Australian journalist present at the Nuremberg war crimes trials 1945-1946, witnessing and recording the executions of the convicted.
