Emeritus Professor John Riddoch Poynter, an academic, talks about the Rhodes Trust, the oldest international fellowships, which were initiated after the death of Cecil Rhodes a British diamond magnate; the scholarships, aimed at creating leaders, bring outstanding students from many countries to the University of Oxford for further study; the selection process for scholars and the inclusion of women; modern reforms within the organization and his role as Australian Secretary since 1974.

Emeritus Professor John Poynter was born in Coleraine, Vic 1929 in the western districts of Victoria. His childhood revolved around the life of the local dentist (his father) in a small country town feeling the effects of the Depression. He has lived in Melbourne since he was 13 years old. Poynter was educated at the Universities of Melbourne and Oxford; held various academic positions within the University of Melbourne from 1953 onwards reaching the position of Deputy Vice-Chancellor 1975-1990 and Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Cultural Affairs) 1991-1994; Professorial Associate, Australian Centre from 1995; Section Editor, Australian Dictionary of Biography 1978-1990; Victorian Rhodes Scholar 1951; Australian Secretary of the Rhodes Trust since 1974; President, Citizens Welfare Service 1972-1991. He has written a number of biographies.
