Joyce recalls her family moving to Canberra towards the end of her schooling and starting work in the Statisticians Department in Canberra (1934), at the age of seventeen; her six brothers, four of them in the Air Force; being transferred to Melbourne for a year to work as a typist in the Taxation Department (1937); going on to work in the Taxation Office in Canberra until she was appointed as Curtin's secretary, while Curtin was still in Opposition; her day-to-day work in the office; Curtin's love for his family; travelling interstate with Curtin as part of her job; Curtin's considerate attitude towards staff who had family members killed or missing in action; Curtin losing sleep after over difficult decisions; her opinion that Labour gave Curtin a hard time; Frank Forde; Frank Anstey; Eddie Ward; Australia's relations with America during the WWII and Curtin's ill-health and overwork; following Curtin's death, her decision to take up a job at the National Library developing the new film section, a project initiated by Sir Harold White; tells a story about rats in Parliament House; being appointed as Private Secretary to Sir John Crawford, then head of the Department of Commerce and Agriculture, a role she remained in for ten years; how after Crawford's retirement she was transferred to the Trade Relations Division, where she remained until her retirement in 1977.
