- Summary:
-
Joan Bentrupperbaumer, a biologist, was living at Mission Beach, northeast Queensland when Cyclone Winifred struck in 1986. As a result of this natural disaster Mission Beach experienced an influx of cassowary birds to the area looking for food and water. With the help of the local community Bentrupperbaumer set up a voluntary cassowary monitoring program, with the aim of trying to build up a profile of the bird population and even individual birds. The Commonwealth Endangered Species Program provided funding for the first full-time study of the biology of the cassowary. Bentrupperbaumer undertook to study a group of birds living in 400 hectares of lowland forest at the nearby mouth of the Hull River.
