Thorsborne, a conservationist, and her husband Arthur had no formal scientific training but went on to become respected naturalists. Margaret grew up in Brisbane near the bush, moving to Southport in the 1950's. Thorsborne speaks of becoming a foundation member of the Gold Coast branch of the Wildlife Preservation Society in the early 1960's; of her and her husband's involvement in various campaigns to save specific native flora and fauna areas in the region from real estate development; the move to Hinchinbrook Island and their continued work as naturalists leading to the publication of an authoritative book on the natural history of the Hinchinbrook area.
