Angela Chan was born in Alexandria, Sydney in 1956. She speaks about growing up in Sydney as a member of the Chinese community and attending High School in Marrickville, graduating from the University of Wollongong, and being admitted to the Bar in 1990, making her the first Australian-born Chinese woman to be admitted as a barrister, the formation and role of the Ethnic Communities Council of New South Wales and her work as the Chair of this Council from 1994, her work in lobbying for the rights of Aborigines and non-English speaking people and her advocacy of a Multiculturalism Act.
