Kelly, an engine driver and painter, speaks of growing up between WWI and WWII, recalling recreation activities as a child in bush; his mother giving him his first paint box of water colours when he was 10 years old; his observations of community life in the early years of the 19th century and the affects of The Depression; leaving school in his early teens and working firstly as a fireman, then as a locomotive driver starting in the early 1930s with the Victorian Railways; Ararat being the focal point in the railway system in Kelly's early days; working from the terminal; the big trade being in timber in those days, with at least 1 or 2 saw mills cutting sawn timber or timber for railways; drawing cartoons, helping out with artwork & layouts & did caricatures for "Catholic Young Man" magazine.
Kelly speaks of his 2 good mates who's love of the bush inspired his interest further to paint eucalypts and wildflowers; becoming a prolific painter of native plants and wildflowers; his first painting of eucalypt in July 1945; his first book "Forty Australian Eucalyptus in colour", published in 1949; travelling through Australia in search of species of eucalypts, getting to know pioneers on the land and in the botanical field, eg working in Herbariums enthused with Australian natives; how by 1978 he accomplished his goal of painting every single eucalyptus species known and classified by science at the time; how he turned his attention to painting fungi, Australian wildflowers, exotic flowers, historical houses and buildings around Ararat.
