Carr, an environmental consultant and conservationist, speaks of his early years growing up on the volcanic plains west of Melbourne; compiling at 10 years of age a photographic catalogue of weeds on their property on the western outskirts of Geelong; how he started to cultivate orchids at 13; finding a new plant species in Victoria and taking it to the National Herbarium for identification; publishing a list of environmental weeds of Victoria in 1981; of his work as an environmental consultant specialising in the preparation of biological surveys and environmental impact assessments for corporations and governments on numerous projects.
Carr speaks of the problems faced by the environment from; the infiltration of "foreign" species of weeds into Australia; the need to strengthen quarantine regulations and plant importation laws; preventative measures to at least minimize damage caused by the weed species; place restrictions on the nursery industry to remove weed species for sale; the loss of native landscapes being directly related to the modern life styles.
