Title compiled from aperture cards by cataloguer.
The 1976 census divided Australia into 129 numbered census divisions (plus 7 additional 'Migratory' divisions, 1 for each of the 6 States and the Northern Territory), numbered from 1 upwards in each state or territory, starting in the northwest corner of each state. Census Divisions generally corresponded to the Commonwealth Electoral Divisions existing at the time of the Census, and adopted the same names. The major differences are the bifurcation of Kalgoorlie and Northern Territory electorates respectively into Kalgoorlie (WA no.1) and North Kalgoorlie (WA no.11), and Top End (NT no.1) and Central Australia (NT no.2) Divisions. Census Divisions were subdivided into Subdivisions, which were in turn subdivided into Collection Districts, the smallest census areal unit.
National Library of Australia's holdings appear to be missing 13(?) cards for NSW Division 4, covering Subdivisions 1-9, and which are not included in the contents listing of 2947 cards given here.
