- Summary:
-
Cai firstly states that Melbourne is a very cultural city with a lot of parks where one can have one's lunch. Melbourne has four seasons in one day. He enjoys the greenery of Melbourne. He believes that there are more women than men, and that women wear few clothes. Australians love gambling, divorce is easily accomplished, and Vegemite is the national treasure. He doesn't know whether life in Australia is too relaxed or whether Australians are lazy. He finds it strange that some markets are only open three days a week, which would be impossible in South-East Asia. Rather than selling things the next day, they are thrown away. Flowers, basic necessities and vegetables are very cheap, yet cigarettes are expensive. Trams are highly valued. The writer describes Australians as very friendly and warm. Heroin is not believed to be a problem in Melbourne, but marijuana is. He believes that minor crime is widespread. French products are not sold because of the nuclear tests in Muroroa. Cai gives an amusing description (pp92-3) of how Australian work. He states that Chinese migrants believe that Australians discriminate against Chinese.
