| Summary |
Joan Phipson speaks about her own writings where she tried to transform the experiences she has had into something that children will enjoy; of the importance of the Australian landscape in her books and favourite books of her own; how she wrote, where her ideas came from, the purpose of her writing and the importance writing "from" rather than "for" children; of her dislike for rewriting but indicated that she generally fitted in with her editor's advice; the value of editors and literary agents; fantasies in Australian children's literature and the work of the illustrator; children's authors from the 1950s onwards.

| Biography/History |
Joan Phipson was born of English parents in Warrawee, Sydney in 1912, spending much of her first 12 years travelling between England and Australia and a short period in India. In 1944 she married and settled on a cattle and sheep property (and wildlife refuge) in Mandurama, in the central tableland area of NSW. By the time she began writing for children after the birth of her first child, Phipson had already worked as a Typist, a School Librarian and Printer at Frensham School, a copy and script writer for radio, and as a Telegraphist in the RAAF. Many of Phipson's 30 books have appeared in overseas editions. Two of Phipson's early works won the Children's Book Council of Australia Book of the Year Award. Other titles were commended or short listed in these same awards. For her contribution to Australian children's literature, Joan Phipson was awarded the Dromkeen Medal in 1987.
