Born in Malvern, Adelaide in 1898, Howard Walter Florey studied at Oxford as a Rhodes scholar graduating in physiology in 1923. He was medical officer on a 1924 Arctic expedition and undertook postgraduate work in pathology at Cambridge and in the United States. In 1928 he received a grant to find a cure for cellular infection based on experiments with pencillin mould discovered by Alexander Fleming in 1928 to have antibiotic properties. Florey was Professor of Pathology at Sheffield University from 1931-1935, then took the Chair in Pathology at Oxford from 1935 where he established a research team at the Sir William Dunn School of Pathology to demonstate the therapeutic use of penicillin. Further financial backing in the U.S. in 1941 for large scale production of stable penicillin resulted in its public introduction in 1943 to fight widespread infections among the Allied armies. Florey was subsequently knighted in 1944. Florey, Chain and Fleming were co-recipients of the 1945 Nobel Prize for the discovery of this wonder drug. He later became the first Australian President of the Royal Society (1960-1965), was raised to the British peerage in 1965 with the Baron of Adelaide and Malvern, and was Chancellor of the Australian National University from 1966-1967.
