Portraits of Oceania is based on a series of photographs by Charles Kerry, Henry King and Paul Foelsche featuring Aboriginal Australians in the collection of the Art Gallery of New South Wales, augmented by portraits of Maori from New Zealand, and the peoples of Fiji, Samoa, Tonga who were closely connected to the eastern seaboard of Australia in the nineteenth century by commerce and religious enterprises -- cf. Portraits of Oceania is drawn from the collection of the Art Gallery of New South Wales and other collections in Australia and New Zealand. It is the first exhibition by an Australian art museum to look at the nature of photographic portraiture of some of the indigenous peoples of Oceania during the first fifty years of photography -- Foreword.
