Description ca. 1921.

Summary

"This is a perspective view of the Griffins' 1922 house for the Reverend Cheok Hong Cheong at Castlecrag, a community also of their design. The house still stands at Lot 53, The Parapet. Along with his role as client, Cheong was a shareholder in the Griffins' corporation, the Greater Sydney Development Association (GSDA). Although unsigned, the drawing likely is by Marion Griffin. Representing the compact, cubic house as but a diminutive element set within luxuriant bush garden, the image beautifully encapsulates Walter and Marion's ideal of a community in which dwellings deferred to the primacy of nature. The letters "CRAG" (likely fragment of the word 'Castlecrag') are faintly legible across the lower portion of the drawing. This possibly was the result of the image having been displayed in the window of the Griffins' GSDA office at 35 Bligh Street, Sydney ..."--Auction catalogue: Shapiro Auctioneers, formerly Phillips Auctions, Modern + contemporary: Lot 353, 9 May 2002, p. 177.
