Summary

Thompson, professional jockey for 45 years was born in Macksville, N.S.W. 1922. He recalls his family background, English & Irish grandparents; early family life on a dairy farm, then his father's work as a stock inspector; horse riding from an early age; his 7 year apprenticeship commencing at age 14 to Sydney trainer Frank Dalton; winning Apprentice Jockey premerships, 1940-1941; having ridden in most major races in Australia (Melbourne Cup, Sydney Cups, Brisbane Cups, Derbies, Epsoms, Metropolitans, Doncasters); racing in New South Wales during and after World War II; 1950 invitation to ride for Irish trainer P.J. Prendergast; professional jockeys, their work & social customs; horse race betting. He gives a brief overview of racecourses in Sydney, well known horses and stables.
