Summary

These five letters were written from the hulks, probably by scribes, for convicts James and William Griffiths, to their mother prior to their transportation from Portsmouth to New South Wales in 1822. It appears the brothers may have been separated due to a proposal that some prisoners would be sent to Bermuda in the West Indies instead of Australia. James is not sure that he will see his brother again. His last letter is written from the ship 'The Arab', under the command of Captain Grant, just prior to setting sail for Australia.
