Ya speaks about the Communist takeover of Cambodia in 1975, escaping to Thailand in 1980, his time in refugee camps in Thailand in 1981, settling in Sydney, his involvement with the Khmer Community of New South Wales, the Khmer Buddhist temple at Bonnyrigg, N.S.W., social issues affecting the Cambodian community in Australia, his visit to Cambodia in 1999, the current economic situation in Cambodia, and his experiences in Cambodia under the Khmer Rouge.
- Biography/History:

Mr Por Heang Ya arrived from Cambodia in the early 1980s and has since worked for the community in paid and voluntary jobs. From 1987 to 1998 he served in various capacities at the organisational level within the Khmer Community of New South Wales. In 1999 he received an Australia Day Award for services to the community from Fairfield City Council.
