Tandberg talks about his working-class Catholic family background; home influences - religion; Catholic primary and early secondary schooling; Coburg Technical School; his interest in drawing; RMIT (Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology) art classes and cartooning and political influences though failed to complete the course, his interest in politics influenced by Petty's cartoons, his personal interests in football and the Young Christian Workers, his work in the Art Dept. of Leader Publishing which published his first cartoon, how his artistic style evolved, publication of his comic strip 'Fred and others' in the Herald Sun and later the Adelaide Advertiser and syndicated in newspapers in the United States; how he undertook part-time teacher training, how he did cartooning for university papers and VSTA (Victorian Secondary Teachers' Association) journal, his increasing awareness of politics, freelancing and then his full time cartoonist position for the Age; his views on the censorship issue; drawing techniques and choice of themes; his period working for Herald Sun and later return to the Age; the social role of the cartoonist; style of Leader; publishing the cartoon strip Tom Thumb; cartooning influences such as Petty and Leunig.
