Biography/History

Nan Kivell was born in New Brighton, South Island, New Zealand and he was educated at New Brighton and Canterbury College. He joined the Army in 1915 and was repatriated to London in 1917 where he completed his education at the Royal College of Science and he was Judge's Marshall to the High Court Judges from 1920-35. In 1922 he bought a partnership in the Redfern Gallery, London, and has been a director since 1925. His collection started coming to the National Library in 1948. Nan Kivell was granted a CMG in 1966 and a knighthood in 1975.
