| Biography/History | Soldier and public health administrator. William Dudley Refshauge was born in Melbourne on 3 April, 1913, and attended Scotch College then University of Melbourne graduating in medicine. He served in the Australian Imperial Force as a medical officer during World War II. In 1951, during the Korean War, he became Deputy Director-General of Army Medical Services and he was promoted to Director-General in 1955-1960. He was Commonwealth Director-General of Health between 1960 and 1973 while chairing the National Fitness Council, the National Tuberculosis Council and the National Health and Medical Research Council. Refshauge chaired the World Health Organisation's Executive Board in 1969-1970 and was Secretary-General of the World Medical Association in 1973-1976. In 1959 Refshauge was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for his services to the Army and in 1966 he was knighted. In 1980 he was made a Companion of the Order of Australia (AC) and in 1991 he was awarded the RSL's highest award, the Meritorious Medal. He is commemorated by the annual Sir William Refshauge Lecture inaugurated in 1999. Refshauge died on 27 May, 2009. |
