The volume comprises a photocopy of the handwritten log of the "Lady Nelson" kept by John Murray on a voyage to Bass Strait between 12th November 1801 and 24th March 1802. Also, a photocopy of the transcript of the log, prepared by Commander Andrew C.F. David in 1980 for the "Great circle". The "Lady Nelson" was the first vessel to enter Port Phillip, as described in the log entry for 8th March 1802. The entry for 15th February 1802 records how Murray named the harbour Port King after the Governor of New South Wales. Murray's log also records how the harbour was subsequently renamed Port Phillip by Governor King. Listed by Lawsons as Lot no. 1116 and sold by auction on 20 October 1993. John Murray was Acting Commander of the "Lady Nelson" during the voyage of discovery to the Bass Strait between 12th November 1801 and 24th March 1802. Andrew C.F. David worked in the Hydrographic Department in Taunton, England.
